Taeil (real name Moon Taeil, 30), a former member of the group NCT who was accused of sexual misconduct, was expelled from his agency SM Entertainment following his departure from the team. SM Entertainment, which has been lenient in responding to controversies over the personal lives of its artists, is reacting unusually to the decision to have Taeil leave the team immediately after being sued and then to terminate his exclusive contract.

SM Entertainment released an official statement on the 16th and said, “We would like to inform you that the exclusive contract with Taeil has been terminated as of the 15th.” He continued, “Taeil is currently under criminal investigation and has been investigated by the prosecution. Not only does this constitute grounds for termination of his exclusive contract, but he can no longer maintain trust as an artist, so we have decided to terminate his exclusive contract in agreement with him.” He added, “We would like to apologize once again for any inconvenience caused by Taeil, who was our artist.”

Taeil was accused in June of sexually assaulting a drunk woman along with two acquaintances. The charge applied was known as special quasi-rape. Special quasi-rape is committed when a person possesses a weapon or when two or more people join together to commit adultery against a person who is incapable of resisting, such as mental or physical loss. If found guilty, you will be sentenced to more than 7 years in prison or life imprisonment. Taeil left the team after being investigated by the police once in August, and the case was handed over to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. SM Entertainment terminated Taeil’s exclusive contract two months after his departure, apparently judging that the charges were serious enough to be sent to the prosecution.

Taeil debuted as a member of NCT’s unit NCT U in 2016. He worked as the team’s main vocalist and also performed on stage as a member of NCT 127.
