The pronatalist policies put in place several years ago have not really reversed the trend.

The Taiwanese call them the hairy children”. In the streets of the capital, Taipei, there is no shortage of strollers. But when you get closer, you are more likely to see a small dog, or even a cat, than a human baby. Often citing economic reasons, many people prefer to compensate for their desire for children with a small animal. In 2023, Taiwan recorded 135,710 births and 205,360 deaths for 23.5 million inhabitants. The population is in sharp decline.

However, this year 2024 marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon in the lunar calendar. Maternity centers and companies specializing in baby products are expecting a mini-baby boom. The dragon is the only mythical animal of the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar. This is why the year has particular importance for many Asians, especially the Chinese and Vietnamese. Children born this year are considered more promising than others.
