Edward Yang Director’s Exhibition

Director Edward Yang is a master of Taiwanese New Wave films, and is loved by cinephiles around the world. In this director’s exhibition, you can see seven works, including ‘Independence Era’, which is being shown for the first time in Korea after 30 years of production, ‘Gwang-eum-jeok-sa’, ‘Haetan-jeok-il-cheon’, ‘Taipei Story’, ‘The Terrorist’, ‘The Murder of the Old Boy’, and ‘One and Two’.

“Independent Age,” which is scheduled to be released in the latter half of this year, is a film that depicts two days and nights full of love, misunderstandings, and conflicts between Molly, a daughter of a wealthy family with all the right conditions, and her strong supporter and best friend Chi Chi, set in Taipei in the 1990s. It was officially invited to the competition section of the 47th Cannes Film Festival in 1994, and was recognized for its artistic quality by being nominated in 12 categories at the 31st Golden Horse Film Festival and winning a total of three awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

The film “The Story of the City” (1982), which marked the beginning of the Taiwan New Wave, is an omnibus film that includes Edward Yang’s debut film “Wanting.” His feature-length debut “The Sky and the River” (1983) is a film about a woman whose husband suddenly disappears and her brother’s first love, a pianist, reuniting and recalling their pasts. It is a work that stands out for its detailed narrative and mise-en-scène. The Taipei Trilogy, “Taipei Story” (1985), “The Terrorist” (1986), and “The Murder of the Boy in the Old Town” (1991), will also be screened. “One and Two” (2000) won the Best Director Award at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival and is director Edward Yang’s last work. It depicts the hidden side and inner side of life with a thoughtful and delicate gaze through the daily lives of a family who each live with their own secrets.

CGV is also holding an event where it will give away director’s edition posters on a first-come, first-served basis to ensure that moviegoers can retain the excitement of the film for a longer time.
