Taipei: The presidential election in the autonomous region of Taiwan will be held on Saturday. The election is crucial in the context of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s announcement in his New Year’s Day message that Taiwan will be reunified through political and military action.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate William Lai is leading in the opinion polls. He is the current Vice President. Lai’s opponent is Hui of the Kuomintang Party, who is loyal to China.
