With the loi « Chips and Science Act », adopted in the summer of 2022, the American state has decided to massively subsidize the national production of semiconductors. In fact, today, it only produces 10% of the world’s chips. “ It’s a national security issue that we don’t make any of the world’s most sophisticated chips in the United States “, declared the Minister of Commerce, Gina Raimondo.

Taiwanese company will produce the two-nanometer chip the most advanced in the world in its second factory in Arizona, production of which should begin in 2028, according to it.

Objective therefore for the administration Biden : strengthen its industrial sovereignty and reduce its dependence on Asia. Taiwan currently guarantees nearly 70% of overall production. The United States is therefore very vulnerable in the event of a geopolitical crisis in the region.

Thousands of jobs at stake

Yet semiconductors are indeed essential for crucial sectors like defense and national security. This is why three factories should see the light of day between 2025 and 2028 in Arizonabringing the Taiwanese giant’s total investment to $65 billion.

Another announced benefit of this opening: 6,000 direct jobs created in these factories and tens of thousands of indirect jobs. As the presidential election approaches, this investment also has a political aspect.
