(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, JULY 10 – Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani launches the Italian candidacy for the NATO envoy on the southern front of the Alliance, defined as a “priority” for our country. “There are also some excellent Italian candidates. I believe that it is precisely because of the knowledge that Italy has of the entire Mediterranean area, starting from the Balkans to Africa and the Middle East, but also the Gulf area. We can make available to the Atlantic Alliance high-level names with knowledge of both NATO and the reality of the southern flank”, said Tajani speaking to the Italian press on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. In a draft of the NATO statement reported by a Reuters journalist on X, we read that the Alliance appoints a special envoy for the south, in reference to the Middle East and Africa. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, at the NATO summit in Washington, says that greater NATO “commitment” to the problems of the “southern flank” of the Alliance is one of the aspects considered “important” by Spain. Instability, the effects of climate change, the Russian presence in the Sahel area and the activities of terrorist groups or human traffickers are among the main issues to be addressed, according to the Spanish Prime Minister. Sánchez added that the priority message of the NATO summit on its 75th anniversary is that of “solidarity with Ukraine”. (ANSA).
