An American study estimates that chronic consumption after the age of 45 increases the risk of developing dementia by 33%.
Cumulative use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for more than 4.4 years would increase the risk of onset of dementia by 33% in people over 45 years of age. These are the alarming conclusions of an American study conducted on 5,712 volunteers from an American cohort and published on August 9 in the scientific journal Neurology .
« This study is of good quality, but it is observational and therefore cannot prove a causal link. It nevertheless constitutes a new signal to remind that PPIs are supposed to be prescribed only for a limited period, between 4 to 12 weeks usually commented Professor Jean-Louis Frossard, head of the gastroenterology department at the University Hospitals of Geneva.
