Geneva,

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August last year. Human rights activists and the people of the country have expressed concern that the harshest conservative laws could be enforced once the Taliban rule is established. However, the Taliban have vowed not to rule as hard as they did during their previous regime (1996-2001).

But the Taliban are imposing a lot of restrictions on women. In that regard, the Taliban announced yesterday that women in public places are required by the Taliban to wear a burqa that covers their entire head from head to toe.

It has been reported that women in government service will be sacked if they do not wear the burqa, as well as if the wife or daughter of men in government service does not wear the burqa, action will be taken against them. Similarly, the Taliban have issued orders not to issue driving licenses to women and to bar women from pursuing higher education.

In this case, the UN has not commented on the Taliban’s announcements. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern. In a post on his Twitter page, he said, “I am shocked that the Taliban have announced that women in Afghanistan must cover their faces in public and leave their homes only for basic necessities.

I reiterate that the Taliban must uphold the promises made to Afghan women and girls and their obligations under international human rights law. ”
