/ Agence France-Presse reported on Thursday that the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan executed two men convicted of murder.
One of the agency’s journalists reported that “the two men were executed by firing squad in a sports stadium in the city of Ghazni, where thousands of men had gathered to witness the execution.”
“These two people were convicted of murder after a two-year trial in the country’s courts, and the order was signed by Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada,” said senior Supreme Court official Atiqullah Darwish.
The families of the victims were present at the stadium and refused to pardon the two men.
The Information and Culture Department in Ghazni province said: “The execution of the two men was carried out in accordance with the principle of retaliation without giving any further details about the convicts and their crimes.”
Public executions were common under the Taliban regime of 1996-2001, with most executions carried out by firing squad or stoning depending on the crime of which the person was convicted.
