The Taliban in Afghanistan have introduced a “morality” law to enforce strict rules of behavior previously monitored by the morality police. The law, which includes, among other things, headscarf requirements for women and access to homosexuality, was approved by the supreme leader of the Taliban, Hibatullah Achundsada, the Ministry of Justice announced on Thursday. It was previously published in the Official Journal at the end of July.

The law strengthens the moral police, which has been monitoring the Taliban’s moral guidelines based on Islamic Sharia law since their return to power in 2021.

Women should be quiet

Among other things, he said that “it is obligatory for Muslim women to cover their faces and bodies” when they are in front of men who are not directly related to them. In addition, women are forbidden to express themselves publicly. They are not allowed to sing, read or read aloud in public.

So men must wear pants that are less than knee-length. They must also have a beard that should not be too short. Homosexual relationships, prostitution and gambling are forbidden, as is making and watching videos or pictures showing living creatures.

Disobeying prayer and disobeying one’s parents can also be punished. According to the new law, media outlets are not allowed to publish content that contradicts “Sharia laws and religion,” “insults to Muslims,” or depicts “living creatures.”

UN: “Climate of fear” in Afghanistan

Moral police can punish violations with warnings, threats, fines, pre-trial detention of up to three days or other sanctions. If the offense is repeated, the accused may be brought to court.

The UN Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (Unama) has accused the watchdogs in the past of creating a “climate of fear” in Afghanistan.

After years of Western military presence, the radical Islamic Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021 and declared the so-called Islamic Emirate. Since then, they have enforced their strict interpretation of Islam with draconian laws and, in particular, restricted women’s rights. Internationally, the Taliban remain isolated. So far, no state has recognized Islamic leaders as the legitimate government of Afghanistan.
