Benin-Nigeria cooperation: Talon and Tinubu determined to strengthen trade

The President of the Republic, Patrice Talon, visited Nigeria on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, where he was received by his counterpart, Bola Tinubu. This tête-à-tête takes place between the two Heads of State as a prelude to the next ECOWAS summit.
“Benin has started implementing a national development plan which includes enhanced integration between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Our development plan includes taking into account the necessary investments in Benin to strengthen our integration with Nigeria in commercial terms.” It is in these terms that President Patrice Talon received by his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Tinubu, requested the latter’s support for the improvement of trade relations between their two countries. During the discussions, Patrice Talon indicated that Benin seeks to strengthen its commercial ties with Nigeria by emphasizing the free movement of people and goods. It is true that many agreements have been signed at the ECOWAS and AfCFTA level, but he intends to act to make this a reality. “Our investment program must be revised to take into account all factors of the Nigerian economy. We are seeking to create an inter-ministerial technical committee that will jointly prepare a draft document for our legislatures. I am ready to sign a decree to appoint council members to advance mutually beneficial cooperation between sectors,” said Patrice Talon. Acknowledging that there are difficulties on the issue of smuggling, he pledged to work to coordinate and ensure that interests are protected. For his part, President Bola Tinubu affirmed that cooperation is imperative for economic prosperity in West Africa. “What affects us is the lack of synergy. We have not developed the economic synergy necessary for the development of our two nations. We must have common economic principles and priorities. The economic program that you are developing through interministerial collaboration is welcomed by me,” he suggested. For him, they must together support the interests of the private sector to facilitate the prosperity of our two important countries. “I appreciate the urgency of your approach and we welcome it. Leadership is sometimes defined by urgent action. Thank you for your quality leadership. We are together. I’m not a retrospective person,” he said
