At a press conference this Thursday, February 8, 2024, President Patrice Talon announced the opening of the borders between Benin and Niger. Indeed, all activities at the port of Cotonou which concern Niger were suspended just after the double UEMOA-ECOWAS summit, held in Abuja and devoted to the political situation in Niger. More than six months after the closure, Patrice Talon announced to open its main border with the Nigerien people. “In a few weeks, the situation will settle down,” declared the Beninese Head of State, facing the media. The consequences of this closure were indeed enormous, both for economic operators and for the population. Because the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, a revolving platform for operations towards Niger, is served to the detriment of another port in the sub-region towards which the leader of the putschist military in Niger, General Abdourahamane Tiani, directed the operations due to this closure.
