The meeting of the President of the Republic on Monday, November 27 with officials of the Democratic party resulted in an agreement for the audit of the electoral list. This is the main point of satisfaction for the opponents who were unable to obtain the president’s favor for the release of Reckya Madougou.
Before the 2026 general elections, the electoral list will be subject to an audit under the control of the opposition and other political parties who wish it. This is how the Les Démocrates party, through its leaders at a press conference, summarizes this point of agreement concluded with President Patrice Talon.
“We hope that this agreement will translate into reality with the demands that it calls for, because it is a global agreement without outlines,” However, the party’s number 2, Eric Houndété, nuanced this. The 1st vice-president of the Democrats also added that in addition to the audit, a mechanism of “mutual surveillance” political forces will have to be put in place around the electoral list as part of the 2026 elections.
No agreement for the release of prisoners
The situation of opponents in prison or in exile was not the subject of agreement. The Democrats pleaded for the release of Reckya Madougou, sentenced to 20 years in prison ; Boni Yayi asked for forgiveness for her but without bending the position of the head of state.
For Democratic leaders, the process for the release of their failed candidate in the 2021 presidential election and other opponents like Joël Aïvo will not remain blocked by this refusal by Patrice Talon. Eric Houndété and fellow deputies intend to continue negotiations with their parliamentary colleagues for the vote on an amnesty law.
However, “the president gave instructions to the Minister of Justice so that the files be accelerated”, declared Eric Houndété regarding the situation of young citizens, Democratic activists, in detention for electoral violence.
