New Zealand: For the first time, a Tamil-Maori language and culture meeting was held in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Avothiaroa Association of New Zealand Tamil Associations (ANTS) and various social and government organizations jointly organized the event.

Last week was the Maori ‘Matariki’ (New Year) celebration. It is the first time in history that a land-based ancient festival is held. And the day was declared a public holiday, seen as a historic achievement. On this occasion, a Tamil-Maori cultural celebration event was also held.

The event was held at a Maori cultural site called ‘Marai’. In this event, various discussions were held for the immigrants to learn about the rights, history and culture of the tribals of this country.

At the start of the program, the Maori people welcomed the Tamil people in their traditional manner of welcome, remembering their ancestors.

In this traditional reception, Maori songs and Tamil Thai greetings were sung. Later, the children participated in traditional stick games and weaving exercises.

Various seminars were held throughout the day on bilingualism, ways to pass the Tamil language to the next generation, and how Tamils ​​can access the Maori language. At the end, there was also an artistic performance involving both cultures.

More than 200 people from various parts of New Zealand participated in this event.
