Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu Due to Low Pressure Area in the Bay of Bengal

After weeks of anticipation, heavy rainfall has finally arrived in Tamil Nadu following the formation of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. While the low pressure area is unlikely to develop into a cyclone, the Indian Meteorological Department has confirmed that the rainy weather will continue.

This comes on the heels of the South West Monsoon officially withdrawing from the region and the onset of the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu. Initially, the rain was not intense, but it started to pick up in intensity in the first week of October, mainly affecting southern and delta districts. In recent days, the rainfall has intensified in the northern districts, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur.

Balachandran, South Zone Head of the Indian Meteorological Centre, provided some insight into the situation, stating that a low pressure area formed in the southeast part of the Bay of Bengal will strengthen into a deep depression and prevail over the Midwest coast. This will result in moderate to heavy rain in most districts of Tamil Nadu.

As for the districts that will be most affected by heavy rain, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to receive heavy rain today. Additionally, heavy rain is forecasted for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts tomorrow.

Despite this, fishing communities are being warned not to visit specific coastal areas on the 17th and 18th due to cyclonic winds, and Chief Minister Stalin has ordered precautionary and relief measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

For anyone needing assistance or information, the State and District Emergency Control Centers are available 24/7 and can be contacted at the following numbers: 1070, 1077, or via WhatsApp at 94458 69848. 27 District Collectors have also been instructed to focus on precautionary measures and ensure the stability of the region’s lakes and water resources.

Abundant rainfall has already been reported in some areas, with Velankanni, Nagai, and Karaikal receiving the maximum amount of rainfall. With the rainy weather persisting and the potential for further heavy rain, residents are advised to stay safe and keep an eye out for any further notices or warnings.
