The government of Tamil Nadu is implementing the ‘Free Sewing Machine Scheme’ so that helpless widows, women abandoned by their husbands, poor women who are economically weak can become self-employed and raise their livelihoods.
Lakhs of women have benefited under this scheme which has been running for more than 30 years. In FY 2021-22 only Rs. At a cost of 1.35 crores, 2,250 women were provided with sewing machines.
In this case, Chennai District Government Chairman Amrita Jyoti said that applications are being accepted under the scheme of providing sewing machines through the Chennai District Social Welfare Office.
Women between the age of 20 to 40 years can apply under this scheme. Applicants should have undergone tailoring training from a registered tailoring institute. Annual family income proof should be below Rs.72,000.

The application form for this can be obtained from the office of South Chennai District Social Welfare, District Collector’s Office, Singharavelar House, 8th Floor, Rajajisalai, Chennai-01. He said that they should fill the application form and submit proofs such as proof of residence, identity card, 2 photographs, proof of income, proof of caste and proof of age before the 6th date.
