Atthar: Motorists and public are traveling in fear as the retaining wall of Vinayakapuram footbridge and Mullaiwadi footbridge has been damaged.
Thousands of vehicles cross the footbridge on the Salem-Chennai National Highway across the Vinayakapuram stream near Atthar every day. The side concrete wall was broken in places due to the high speed of the vehicles passing through the bridge. Later, on both sides of this bridge, an iron barricade was erected.
In August 2019, a lorry loaded with parcels and traveling at high speed collided with an iron barrier on one side and had an accident. The truck overturned in the stream. The barrier was broken in the accident. The broken iron barriers have not been repaired till date. The public and motorists have demanded that the National Highways Department should take action to build this bridge as a high-level bridge.
* Vashishta river footbridge
In 2012-13, a footbridge was constructed at a cost of 39 lakh rupees from Atthar, Thayumanavar Street, across Vasishta river to Mullaivadi. When the high water passed through this bridge, the barricades were damaged. One section of the bridge is completely devoid of parapets and the other side is damaged. The people of the area are demanding that these be repaired.
