Aathur: A complaint has been raised that the Aavin administration has abandoned the cattle frozen production center project in Karumanthurai.
In 2020, the then Chief Minister Palaniswami launched the Cattle Park project in Thalaivasal, Salem district, on 1,102 acres at a cost of Rs 1,022 crore. Subsequently, when the veterinary college was opened in 2021, a frozen sperm production center for domestic and crossbred cows was built at Karumanthurai in Kalvarayanmalai at a cost of 100 crore rupees; He said that the hybrid cow production center project in the livestock park complex will be implemented by Avin.
Subsequently, 65 acres of land was given to ‘Aavin’ management in Horticulture department fruit farm complex to set up cattle freezing center in Karumanthurai. While some parts of the place have been levelled, there has been a complaint that the animal freezing center has not been started. It has also been reported that there is a plan to raise high-quality calves through Aavin.
13 districts
In this regard, Animal Husbandry Department officials said: Semen are collected from cattle farms in Ooty, Echangottai, Hosur, Abishakapatti and distributed to frozen sperm distribution centers in 13 districts including Salem. Collected sperm can be used to inseminate cattle, even years later. Preserved with liquid nitrogen every 45 days.
3.50 lakh cattle
In Salem district, by 2022, semen of Jersey, British, Sindhi, Kangeum, Mura (Buffalo) and crossbred cows have been inseminated in 3.50 lakh cattle under artificial insemination programme. The government has already announced setting up a frozen production center as it has set up a cattle park. Livestock production will increase when the scheme is implemented. Thus they said.
Officials of AAV said: 65 acres of land has been given to AAV’s management in Karumanthurai. The current government is planning to raise high quality Kitari calves and supply them to the farmers. The work will be started soon. Don’t know about frozen production plan. Only after the construction work on the animal park is completed, will the project be revealed.

Apart from this, the company did not undertake any work. At Karumanthurai, the work has not been carried out at the place allocated for the establishment of freezing center for Aavin. The department says that Avin has abandoned this plan as well. The Tamil Nadu government should take steps to set up an egg freezing center and a high quality livestock production center here.
