Madurai: The Madurai Central District Transport Office has its own building and the North Office has been functioning without an RTO for several months.
Madurai city has South, North and Central Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). North RTO, Selvam retired 6 months back. Since this post is vacant so far, Central RTO, Chitra is looking after it as an additional responsibility.
2 out of 5 vehicle inspector posts are vacant in Madurai North office. Under this office there are 2 unit offices at Melwar, Vadipatti. More than 200 vehicles are registered daily. Due to this there is additional workload in this office.
The same is the case with the central office. There are no unit offices under this office.
Here there is only one vehicle inspector out of 3 posts. More than 100 vehicles are registered daily. Along with regular work in the above offices, the workload is high due to increase in vehicles and accidents.
Also, lack of own building for the central office is a major drawback. They use the north office premises for vehicle registration and driving license checks. The office space has not yet been found. Space for central office and appointment of North RTO is essential.
