NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed a plea seeking a declaration that all animals have the same legal rights as humans.
In this regard, the Public Interest Petition filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the NGO states:
Cases of cruelty to animals come to light only too late. Existing laws seem to be insufficient to protect animals.
Therefore, like humans, animals should be declared to have legal rights.
This was requested in the petition.
Hearing the petition, the court dismissed the petition stating that ‘the claim of the petitioner under Article 32 of the Constitution of India is of extraordinary scope and therefore no order can be passed’.
