Chennai: Power is generated in 15 units in five thermal power stations.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has thermal power plants in Thiruvallur District, Atthipat, with three units of 210 MW capacity each named North Chennai and two units of 600 MW capacity each named North Chennai Extension.

Tuticorin has five units of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station of 210 MW capacity each.

Mettur, Salem district has four units, Mettur Thermal Power Station of 210 MW capacity each and Mettur Expansion Thermal Power Station of 600 MW capacity.

The combined power generation capacity of the above power plants is 4,320 MW. On an average, up to 3,000 megawatts of electricity is generated daily, peaking during summer.

North Chennai, Mettur and Tuticorin Thermal Power Stations have been operating for over 25 years. Due to repair in some unit of thermal power plants, power production is affected.

In particular, at the North Chennai Extension Power Station, which came into operation in 2014, production is often affected.

The Electricity Board has recently directed the engineers to take steps to ensure full production in all thermal power plants after the onset of summer.

Accordingly, steps were taken to start power generation. The third unit of the Tuticorin power station, which had been shut down due to repairs, resumed production yesterday.

Subsequently, after a long time, electricity is being produced in all 15 units from yesterday.
