Madurai- As the Madurai Collector’s office is about to shift to the old building due to lack of adequate facilities, the renovation work has intensified.

Madurai Collectorate was built in 1916 during British rule. In this complex of more than 7 acres, there are other offices including Madurai North and South Taluks, Fire Station, Medical Warehouse, Government Vehicle Maintenance Station.

Due to lack of space in this building, a new building was constructed a few years ago at a cost of Rs.35 crore. Collector, DRO, Survey, Social Welfare, Public Distribution, Elections, Backward Welfare and some other departments were relocated here.

Whereas the offices of Satnu, Urban Public Distribution Offices, District Archives, Treasury etc. are functioning in the old building.

There was a discussion whether to keep this building under the control of the Department of Archeology and operate it as a museum. Many of the departments that will be created by the new building are located in different areas, so they feel that they can be brought into this space.

As a result, the Collector, D.R.O., rooms etc. are going to be brought back to the old building. The renovation work is in progress accordingly.
