India’s unemployment rate rose to 7.8 percent in March from 7.45 percent in February.

India’s unemployment is projected to rise to 8.30 percent in December 2022, according to data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). It then fell to 7.14 percent in January. It rose again to 7.45 percent in February. At present unemployment has increased by 0.35 percent in the country. As far as urban areas are concerned, the unemployment rate was 8.4 per cent in March and 7.5 per cent in rural areas, the data said.

State wise unemployment is 26.8 per cent in Aryana, followed by Rajasthan 26.4 per cent, Jammu and Kashmir 23.1 per cent, Sikkim 20.7 per cent, Bihar 17.6 per cent and Jharkhand 17.5 per cent. Unemployment stands at 0.8 per cent in Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh, 1.5 per cent in Puducherry, 1.8 per cent in Gujarat, 2.3 per cent in Karnataka and 2.6 per cent each in Meghalaya and Odisha.
Unemployment in Tamil Nadu also increased from February. It was 3 percent in Feb. It rose to 3.4 percent in March.

Employment in retail, supply chain, logistics manufacturing, financial services and e-commerce declined after the October-January festive season. Sectors such as IT, technology and startups are also experiencing a slowdown in new hiring due to the global crisis. These factors have reduced employment opportunities. Manufacturing, engineering, construction and infrastructure provide employment.
