Puducherry, : Volunteers were trained to rescue people trapped in ponds.

The Puducherry State Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority has developed a disaster buddy scheme called Aptamitra.

The first phase of the program trained 145 volunteers.

As the second phase, the 12-day training for 73 volunteers started on the 14th. District Collector Manikandan inaugurated it.

For the fifth day in a row, volunteers were given lifesaving training at Karuvadikuppam Sidthananda temple pool yesterday. A practical demonstration was given on rescuing people trapped in ponds using ropes. It was also explained about using plastic bottles, cans and coconut shells available at home to float in the water and reach the shore.

In this training course, which will be held for seven days, experts from various departments including weather, police, coast guard and fire will be trained on how to act during disasters. Also, training on fire department rescue work, life saving techniques, fire fighting and equipment usage is also being imparted. The methods of self-defense in the case of house fires are also to be explained.
