Coimbatore: A special committee has been set up to inquire into the daily wage of Rs.721 fixed by the Collector for the contract cleaners working in the Coimbatore Corporation.

Coimbatore Corporation employs more than 3,600 contract employees. According to the price point, it is customary to fix the daily wages every year and publish a collector’s notice. According to this, the previous collector Sameeran ordered Rs.721 for contract cleaning workers. Corporation Commissioner Prathap is refusing to give this amount.

A special resolution was passed in the board meeting and fixed at Rs.648.

ESI, – PF, Phuttam Pogo, available between Rs.470-475.

The contract cleaning workers are protesting for the daily wages fixed by the collector.

In this context, a ‘tender’ has been called for private individuals to provide garbage collection work in all 100 wards. This too has created unrest among the workers.

Condemning this, the union federations have announced that they will go on an indefinite strike from the 23rd.

The daily wage is high!

In this context, it has been pointed out to the Tamil Nadu Government from the Corporation that the daily wage fixed by the Collector is high. A special committee has been set up from the Tamil Nadu Finance Department to inquire into this and finalize the daily wages. A report has also been sought from the present Collector Kranthikumar.

Why the 35 percent increase?

Corporation Commissioner Pratap said, “The minimum salary in commercial companies is Rs 18,000. Accordingly, the daily wage is Rs.600; In the Corporation, Rs.648 is provided. Usually, 5 to 10 percent salary increment is given. It is not known on what basis the Collector fixed Rs.721. 35 percent has been raised. A special committee has been set up from the finance department to investigate and finalize the matter. Ward-wise, special camps are being conducted to resolve the issues related to ESI-PF,” he said.
