Former African Foreign Ministers Sign “Tangier Call” to Expel “Pseudo Rasd” from AU
During a follow-up meeting of the “Tangier Call,” organized on the sidelines of the MEDays Forum, five former African Ministers of Foreign Affairs signed this “Call,” initiated on November 4, 2022, in Tangier. These include Mr. David J. Francis of Urbino Botelho, Ezechiel Nibigira, Albert Mabri Toikeusse, and Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, former heads of diplomacy of Sierra Leone, Sao Tome & Principe, Burundi, Ivory Coast, and Senegal, respectively.
This brings the total number of signatories of the “Tangier Appeal” to 23 since its inception a year ago.
The signatories expressed their support for the continental impact and momentum generated by the ”Tangier Call” and reaffirmed their commitment to working for the “urgent exclusion” of the “pseudo rasd,” a non-state entity, from the African Union.
They also welcomed the growing commitment in Africa to the Moroccanness of the Sahara, noting the multiplication of consulates general in Dakhla and Laayoune as evidence of pan-African dialogue and the desire to overcome divisions for a prosperous future.
The signatories expressed their support for Resolution 2703 of the United Nations Security Council, recognizing the need for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict in the Sahara. They also reaffirmed their full support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only solution for the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The signatories reiterated their commitment to achieving the expulsion of the “pseudo rasd” from the African Union, calling on the African and international community to fully adhere to the Moroccan Autonomy Plan to resolve the conflict.
