Prime Minister’s Private Industries and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman said that short-term environmental certificates will be given to tannery businessmen till Qurbani Eid for the sake of leather export.

However, he also warned that if they do not come within the rules of the Ministry of Environment after the sacrifice, it will be closed.

Salman F. Rahman said these things to the journalists after an exchange meeting with the officials of the company and businessmen related to this business at Hemayetpur leather industrial city in Savar on Wednesday (March 6) afternoon. He also said that there is no obstacle if a tannery wants to build a waste treatment plant by itself.

This exemption will be given keeping in mind the environment, agriculture and human health. The Prime Minister sees leather as a special sector. He always talks about the bright potential of this sector. Therefore, all kinds of support will be given to the development of this sector.

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said that the government will be strict on environment, agriculture and public health even if temporary concession is given. After the sacrifice, the license of polluting factories will be cancelled. Environmental problems are known. All kinds of damage caused due to this should be resolved. Short-term certificates will be issued but permission will be given keeping in mind that there is no harm to the environment and people.

Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said in the exchange meeting that the problems that have arisen in the tannery industry cannot be solved in one day. It will be reformed with different term plans. Short and long term plans are being worked on for reforming CETP of tanneries.
