The name of Tannya Varela, former Police Commander, appears in a report prepared by the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Front. The document describes Varela’s links with the Albanian mafia.

The digital portal Primicias reported on the findings of the Parliamentary Front. It must be remembered that this front was headed by the former presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio.

Before being a candidate for that position, Villavicencio chaired the Oversight Commission of the Assembly that was dissolved in the government of Guillermo Lasso. He was killed on August 9, 2023.

How does Varela enter the Albanian Mafia operation? The Parliamentary Front points to Dritan Gjika as the person in charge of the security of the criminal structure. For this there was coordination with a police officer who was known as ‘The Godmother’ and was the former police commander.

Varela was appointed Commander in the government of former President Lenín Moreno and remained in office during the administration of Guillermo Lasso.

But, Varela’s name had already appeared in the case called León de Troya that was unified with the Encuentro case. The Police were investigating links between Rubén Cherres (murdered) and Danilo Carera, Lasso’s brother-in-law, with the Albanian Mafia.

The former Commander was in charge of disintegrating the team that was carrying out the investigation, according to the report from the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Front. General Giovanni Ponce, who was National Director of Anti-Drug Investigation, was in charge of executing the decision.

Dritan Gjika, a well-known name

The name of the Albanian Dritan Gjika became relevant once again after the joint operation between Ecuador and Spain, on February 6. The blow to the Albanian mafia included arrests, although not that of Gjika, who remains a fugitive.

The Police said after the operation that they were on the trail of the Albanian.
