“During the last year I have silently received false accusations replicated by several media outlets that, in the performance of their ‘journalistic’ role, sentenced me as a participant in a wave of degrading corruption,” said the former Police Commander on February 19. in a statement published on his X account.
“It is intended to force public opinion to believe that I, TANNYA VARELA CORONEL, taking advantage of my position as General Commander of the National Police of Ecuador, supposedly favored criminal organizations and a series of additional basenesses that I cannot but categorically and deny. categorically,” he added.
Varela is mentioned in the report on the León de Troya case, which revealed relationships that the Albanian Dritan Rexhepi kept in Ecuador.
In that document, the Parliamentary Anti-Corruption Front -of which he was a member Fernando Villavicencio– mentions Varela several times. For example, she points out that she participated in the closing of the drug trafficking investigation that involved Danilo Carrerabrother-in-law of the then president Guillermo Lasso.
