Morokoro: A Belgian volunteer organization is training rats to use them in search and rescue operations in Tanzania. The training is being conducted in the Morokoro region of the country.
In the movie ‘Monster’ released a few years ago, there will be some scenes to show the intelligence of Eli. It is imagination. Rats are given special training in Tanzania as seen in some such fantasy movies. This training is imparted for disaster rescue and search operations.
A high-tech bag is shown on the rat’s back. It will include a location-aware device, a video camera and two-way radio communication. It is also reported that through this radio device you can talk to the affected people. This training is provided by ABOBO.
Rats can be trained like dogs, trainers say. It is believed that the consumptive capacity of rats helps a lot in this. Currently, African giant bounch rats are being used for this task. Its lifespan is said to be 8 to 10 years.
