SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) – Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) criticized Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB)’s proposal to institute zero fares on the São Paulo capital’s bus system on Sundays or at night from next year onwards. “I am absolutely against it,” said the governor this Friday afternoon (24).

“I cannot see the feasibility of putting in place a system with 8.3 million passengers with zero fare, which has a completely different cost structure,” he said.

According to the governor, the budget for other public policies will have to be sacrificed to support a transport system at no cost to passengers. “Zero tariff is something that doesn’t make sense, isn’t sustainable and we won’t get on board,” he said at Palácio dos Bandeirantes after participating in an event with representatives of São Paulo’s agribusiness.

The mayor proposed a study on zero tariffs less than a year before the municipal elections in which he will seek reappointment to the position. According to Nunes, the benefit will cost R$400 million and the first tests will be carried out from December.

This Friday, the governor promised to raise the tone against state employees who voted to indicate a strike for next Tuesday (28). “We cannot be enslaved by half a dozen people from a union who have their own agenda, who are looking at their own navel. We will not tolerate this kind of thing,” said the governor.
