The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, said he is totally against granting free passes on public transport. He was asked about the topic during a press conference on Friday the 24th in which he responded about the strike in the Metro announced by the unions for Tuesday the 28th.

“I cannot see the feasibility of putting in place a system that has 8.3 million passengers with zero fares,” he declared. Has anyone actually presented the bill for how much the subsidy will be?”

The governor said that other public policies would have to be sacrificed to meet the free pass agenda — an old leftist flag. “How much are you going to subtract from other public policies to come with zero tariffs? For me this is something that is not sustainable, does not make sense, and we are not going to embark.”

Pre-candidate for re-election, the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), announced his intention to implement zero fares on buses in the capital of São Paulo on Sundays or at night. Cities such as Belo Horizonte (MG), Florianópolis (SC), Salvador (BA) and Fortaleza (CE) debate similar proposals.

In the interview, the governor also said that he will not authorize the release of turnstiles to avoid Tuesday’s strike, as suggested by the unions involved in the strike. “Has any governor been given free rein in history? No, because there is a security reason for it,” he told journalists. “Releasing the free turnstile is irresponsible, and we will not be irresponsible.”

Tarcísio once again criticized the strike, which is political and not labor in nature. “There is a strike against privatizations. This was discussed in the election. Not accepting this is not accepting the results of the polls,” he declared. To deal with the situation, the government decreed an optional and has already appealed to the Court.

On October 3, employees from Metrô, CPTM and Sabesp went on strike against Tarcísio’s privatization plans. The strike lasted 24 hours and was classified by the government as illegal.
