The governor of the State of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, promoted yet another budget cut for the program to implement body cameras on the uniforms of Military Police (PM) agents. The government published in the Official Gazette of São Paulo this Friday (18), that the value of R$ 11 million will be reallocated to the actions of the ostensible and daily police of the PM.

The government has already invested around R$ 45 million to expand the program this year. The value is only a part of what was foreseen, being an amount initially thought by the Legislative Assembly of R$ 152 million. The amount ended up being reduced to R$ 136 million.

The governor has been under pressure from the Bolsonarist base to end the body camera program. The measure gained more strength after the death of Ronda Ostensiva agent Tobias de Aguiar (ROTA) in Guarujá.

After the death that occurred in Baixada Santista, Operation Shield was triggered, leaving 16 dead in alleged clashes with the Military Police. In most cases, agents did not use cameras. However, witnesses report cases of execution during the action.

A survey carried out by the Brazilian Public Security Forum in partnership with Unicef shows that in 2022, the number of adolescent deaths in police interventions dropped 80.1% in São Paulo. But, the governor suggests that the equipment makes the work of the police more difficult, in addition to ensuring that there will be a reduction in the violence committed.
