In a press conference this Wednesday morning (22nd), the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said that he had taken legal action to obtain authorization to remove families from homes that are in risk areas on the North Coast of the state. .

According to the politician, compulsory removal, however, will be done as a last resort. He stated that the purpose of the authorization is to guarantee the safety of the population.

“We will try to convince, we will use all the arguments, we will try to welcome, we will try to show that they will be sheltered, we will show that we will protect the heritage, that we will guarantee security and, in the last case, the people will carry out the compulsory removal”.

Also according to Tarcísio, policing in all affected locations will be reinforced to help in the work of convincing residents to leave their homes and prevent looting of homes.

“We are having a lot of difficulty convincing. Yesterday we brought 80 police officers from Choque here to do policing and prevent looting. Today another 300 PMs will arrive to reinforce security and prevent looting. so that the courts would allow us, as a last resort, to remove people who are residing in a risk area”, said the governor.

The governor also confirmed the return of water supply in São Sebastião. In a note, Sabesp also confirmed the information.

withdrawals from donations

This Wednesday (22), Tarcísio also stated that criminals have looted loads of donations from vehicles that are arriving on the coast to assist victims of landslides.

According to the politician, there is still no detailed information on who the looters are and which areas are being looted. However, the governor says that the Shock Battalion was activated to try to control the situation and prevent further robberies.

“They are looting trucks with donated supplies. I put the shock on now to end it”, he highlighted.

So far, the storm that devastated the North Coast of the state has already killed 48 people (47 in São Sebastião and one in Ubatuba). Rescue teams continue to search for around 57 people who are still missing. The searches take place mainly in the neighborhoods on the south coast of São Sebastião, such as Vila do Sahy and Juquehy.

Still according to Tarcísio, some residents who resorted to shelters installed in the region chose to return to their homes for fear of looting, even with the risk of new disasters.

“Some people went to shelters and had their homes looted. Then they left the shelters and don’t want to leave. Some simply don’t want to leave”, pointed out Tarcísio.

So far, R$ 7 million has already been released by the state government for the first expenses of municipalities with disasters, however, the governor estimates the release of more money over the course of the days.
