Target bans Russian state media for “foreign interference activities”

The parent company of Facebook or Instagram, Threeannounced this Monday that it will ban access to Russian state media worldwide and in all its applications due to “foreign interference activities.”

The ban came after the United States sued RT, formerly known as Russia Today, already employees of this state media channel 10 million dollars by shell companies to finance secretly in effect campaigns on social networks like TikTok, Instagram, X y YouTube.

“After careful consideration, we are increasing our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media,” representatives of the tech giant said. According to a lawsuit filed in New York, RT has to stop operations in the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union and the United States due to sanctions arising from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

US prosecutors said that an RT editor-in-chief created “an entire empire of projects” intended to shape public opinion in “Western audiences.” One of those projects was financing and operating a digital content company in the state of Tennessee, according to the indictment.

According to regular reports published by Facebook, since 2017 Russia is the country that produces the most violent activities that are later blocked on its platform, a trend that increased after the invasion of Ukraine launched by Moscow .

In September, the US State Department said it had informed governments around the world through diplomatic channels about Russia’s use of RT to conduct covert operations.
