Targeted by homophobic tags, the mayor of a Jura village files a complaint

“Gabriel in garter belt”, “pedophilic”, “mayor on the run”, « travelot »… Around ten homophobic tags, some written with mistakes, were discovered by Gabriel Echemond, mayor of Eclans-Nenon, in Jura, Monday December 25, on the walls of the town hall, the cemetery, on a bus shelter or even directly on the bitumen. He filed a complaint, he told Agence France-Presse on Friday December 29.

“The culprits, we will find them”assured the elected, convinced that there is ” several “ auteurs. ” I do not think so “ whether they are from the village. “All the people in the town that I have seen are outraged (…). They were afraid that I would resign but I will not resign, that would (…) prove the authors right »he insisted.

“It doesn’t hurt me”

The tags were undoubtedly made on Christmas Eve night, according to Mr. Bremond. “It was Santa Claus”he quipped. “We have to turn all this into humor and derision”even if “it’s done by imbeciles”added the councilor elected in 2022. An act which is part of an increase in attacks targeting local elected officials. “It doesn’t hurt me”declared Mr. Bremond again, saying however “embarrassed for the village”.

The elected official says he received dozens of messages of support “from all over France”venus “chosen ones” as “private”. The Minister responsible for local authorities and rurality, Dominique Faure, also sent him a message of support, assured Mr. Bremond. According to the Ministry of the Interior, verbal or physical attacks against local elected officials increased by 32% between 2021 and 2022, and will have increased by 15% at the end of 2023 compared to 2022.
