A genuine Calabrian who today is “the pride of Florence”, but Central European – indeed global as his latest record – Peppe Voltarelli, who draws on authorial music or rather his roots impregnated with the saltiness of the ports of Rotterdam or Marseille or the dust of Argentine suburbs to pack – among other things in time of Covid and lockdown – the “Planetarium” that won the Tenco Interpreters section at the Targhe Tenco, collecting 77 preferences in the race with Ornella Vanoni (Unica, 64 votes) and Ginevra Di Marco (What conta), Miriam Foresti (A soul with no footprint) and Federico Poggipollini (Stolen songs). The plaque will be delivered next October at the Ariston Theater in Sanremo.

And the news was commented in this way by Tommaso Sacchi, the councilor for Culture of Florence, where Voltarelli lives with his half, Anna Corcione, the artist who signs his covers: «It is an award that fills the whole city with pride . I express my sincere congratulations and the deepest satisfaction for the important recognition obtained by Peppe Voltarelli to which our community is very attached. Peppe, a Calabrian from Mirto and a Florentine by adoption, is an extroverted singer-songwriter and writer, who always gives us great emotions with his author songs and his performances in the square on these summer evenings, with an event halfway between theater and music will be an opportunity to appreciate his talent once more ».

The Tenco Award is one of the most important Italian musical awards, awarded annually on the occasion of the Sanremo songwriting review organized by the Tenco Club.

“Planetario” (Unbalanced Publisher) was the most popular album in the Song interpreters category (77 votes). And it probably couldn’t have been otherwise, because the disc is cut right on the author’s song that has become a world cultural heritage. Voltarelli returns to publish with Silvio Rodriguez and Joan Manuel Serrat, Amancio Prada, Adriana Varela, Joan Isaac and unleashes a vocal memory of Luis Eduardo Aute just passed away for Covid in his fifth solo album, a journey from Brel to Vysotskij but also with rearrangements of original songs that are beginning to travel the world (such as “Sailors”, translated into Spanish).

And for the plate Best album in dialect, with 51 votes the most voted work was Manzamà by the Mancuso Brothers, also Squilibri Editore, who even years ago published the album by Voltarelli and Otello Profazio also awarded in Sanremo. For the Targa Tenco Project collective album has obtained the highest consents “For example we like Rino” (Isola Tobia Label) with 52 votes, a dutiful homage to Rino Gaetano.

A little biographical news. Peppe Voltarelli was founder and frontman of Il Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti, a band with which he made seven records including rock, punk and popular music that marked the Italian scene of the 90s. In 2006 he embarked on a solo career and staged a recital on Domenico Modugno, “He wanted to be an artist”. “Distratto ma However” is instead his first solo album, from here on he is the protagonist or co-star of a series of record and film projects, (among others, the cult “The legend of Tony Vilar” with the director – now on television – Giuseppe Gagliardi) and editorials: his semi-serious novel “The bronze caciocavallo” is a sort of “On the road” on the Ionian state road, Voltarelli is also a very fine writer. But above all he loves to tell her his stories live, between one song and another, entertaining – if it also serves as a gesture – public in Florence as in Berlin or Caracas.
