The head of the train drivers’ union GDL, Claus Weselsky, gives rail customers little time to breathe. The trains will stand still again on Wednesday, two days after his “Christmas truce” expires this Monday. The reason for the reprieve is likely to be the travel activity of close trade unionists: First of all, the annual meeting of the DBB Civil Service Association, with which the GDL is closely linked, is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday in Cologne. It’s no surprise that this event is spared.

The train drivers’ strike begins shortly afterwards: freight traffic will be on strike on Tuesday at 6 p.m., long-distance and regional traffic will be on strike from Wednesday at 2 a.m. Rail traffic will be at a standstill again for two days, until Friday at 6 p.m. The railway reacted immediately: DB human resources director Martin Seiler called the strike “absolutely unnecessary” and legally inadmissible. The company announced on Sunday evening that it would go to the Frankfurt labor court in order to obtain a ban on the strike in an expedited procedure.
