He himself shared the cartoon depicting BNP Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman as a negative character. On August 7, Tariq Rahman, who is staying in London, shared the cartoon drawn by cartoonist Mehdi Farooq on his verified Facebook on Sunday (August 11).
Netizens praised it and wrote that the acting chairman of BNP showed democratic mentality by appreciating the criticism.
Tariq Rahman, who has been in the UK for the past 16 years, is communicating with the country through virtual means. Last Thursday, he spoke through video conference at the BNP’s general meeting. A cartoon drawn by Mehdi Farooq implied that Tariq Rahman was leaving the virtual world and coming towards Bangladesh in the absence of power.
Tariq Rahman’s Facebook post
Tariq Rahman shared this cartoon and wrote, ‘I am deeply happy that the freedom to draw political cartoons has been restored in Bangladesh. Before 2006, Bangladeshi cartoonists, especially Shishir Bhattacharya, often drew cartoons about my mother and me. However, over the past 15 years, cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore has been subjected to enforced disappearances, unimaginable torture and imprisonment for his work. Many others faced similar persecution. Shishir Bhattacharya stopped drawing cartoons. I was a fan of cartoonist Mehdi, also enjoyed Shishir Bhattacharya’s work. I sincerely hope he draws political cartoons soon and regularly.’
