Tasia Fortune Death Was Staged Lynching Tied to Drug Dispute, Police Say

Investigators testified Friday that the August hanging death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune in Jackson, Mississippi, was a staged killing stemming from a drug dispute. Two Black men face murder charges, while police seek a third suspect in a case that drew national attention due to echoes of historical racial violence.

The death of Tasia Fortune in Jackson, Mississippi, was a staged lynching tied to a drug dispute, according to testimony delivered Friday by Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes during a preliminary hearing. Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four, was discovered dead and suspended from a tree behind an abandoned home on August 3. Investigators believe she had been dead for two to three days before her body was found.

While the state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, officials have not publicly disclosed the exact cause of death. The grim discovery immediately provoked nationwide attention and community concern because the scene evoked Mississippi’s history of racial violence. However, authorities have emphasized that the killing was not a hate crime.

Friday’s hearing was convened to determine if sufficient evidence exists to present the case against 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff to a grand jury. Ratliff, who was arrested earlier in the month, has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed in the Hinds County jail without bond.

Detective Dukes testified that investigators linked Ratliff to the case through witness statements. According to the detective, Ratliff and Fortune were friends who had been intimate with each other. Dukes further alleged that Ratliff made pre-arrest statements containing specific details that investigators believe you would only know if you were there. Authorities also collected a DNA sample from Ratliff, though testing results are still pending.

Second Suspect Arrested and Ongoing Investigation Details

Authorities arrested a second suspect this week: 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr., who now faces a murder charge. Police are also actively seeking a third suspect in connection with the homicide.

According to reporting by the Clarion Ledger cited during testimony, investigators believe Fortune was killed at a separate location before her body was placed in a hanging position behind the abandoned property. Dukes testified that interviews with others indicated Fortune fought hard before she was killed.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, attended the proceedings and responded to Ratliff’s courtroom statements. It sounded sincere. Tasia had a lot of friends, Spivey said, adding, I hope if he is innocent that he can prove he’s innocent. We don’t want any innocent people going to jail. Spivey also told local reporters she is still waiting to see additional evidence linking Ratliff to the crime, stating, I just hope they have the right people.

Reflecting on her daughter’s life, Spivey noted that Fortune had struggled with homelessness in recent years but was actively working to rebuild her life, hoping to start a cleaning business. Spivey previously described her daughter to ABC News as strong-minded and full of laughs and love, reiterating that she never believed her daughter’s death was self-inflicted.

As the legal process moves forward, a GoFundMe campaign established to support Fortune’s family had raised $181,571 from nearly 5,000 donations as of 5 p.m. Friday. Organizers stated that the funds will help bring Fortune home for burial, support her four children, and assist the family in their continued search for justice and answers.

The preliminary hearing for Jarques Ratliff is scheduled to resume on September 30 to determine whether the evidence will be sent to a grand jury for a possible indictment.
