Reports speak of “Tassla-Gate” after an incredible number of coffee cups went missing from Germany’s Gigafactory.

Coffee cups are said to have gone missing on a large scale at the Tesla factory near Berlin, as the news magazine “Spiegel” wrote on Wednesday.

Since production began, the US company has ordered thousands of cups of coffee for its approximately 12,000 employees, although many have already left.

These are said to be Ikea cups, as previously reported by the “Handelsblatt”. The plant manager responsible for the unexplained loss of material said during a works meeting, as evidenced by a leaked audio recording. He is said to have angrily told the team:

«65,000! Statistically, each of you already has five Ikea coffee cups at home. I’m really tired of approving orders to buy more cups of coffee.”

There was a mixed response among employees as the head of the Gigafactory publicly linked his workforce to theft. Some laughed and clapped, others were worried, according to the report.

There is currently no statement from the company or Elon Musk regarding Tassla-Gate.

Something was already there

The “Spiegel” smugly recalls an earlier media attack by the American-South African tech billionaire: In October 2023, in a debate about sea rescue, Musk told the “Spiegel” in German: “You don’t have all your cups in the chest anymore.”

Mind you, this was after he spread conspiracy myths about the German sea rescuers.

While there is a dispute at Tesla’s German factory over missing coffee cups (“available at Ikea at a regular price starting at 79 cents”), an electric car manufacturer in Grünheide is also having problems related to the actual product.

“While the US car manufacturer recently received approval to expand its factory and is about to begin construction, Tesla also announced that it would be laying off dozens of employees in this country. One of the reasons behind the plans is the reduced demand for electric cars in Germany, while at the same time the company is struggling with cheaper competition from China.
