The 50th anniversary of the liberation of Famagusta was celebrated with two separate ceremonies.

The first ceremony was held at the Victory Monument. The ceremony ended after placing wreaths on the monument in accordance with the order of protocol, holding a moment of silence and raising the flags together with the National Anthem.

The second ceremony was held on İsmet İnönü Boulevard. President Ersin Tatarisi, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, President of the Assembly of the Republic Zorlu Töre, senior military and civilian officials and the public attended the ceremony.

The ceremony began on the boulevard with the singing of the National Anthem, a moment of silence, and the raising of the flags. Then the holiday celebration of the people and the ceremonial troops.

At the ceremony, a student from the Turkish Maarif College Famagusta Zergün Meşe read the poem ‘Famagusta’. Then the speeches began.

In his speech, Infantry Lieutenant Hacı Ömer Şaban from the Infantry Regiment Command said, “How lucky we are to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sunrise on August 15, 1974,” and he commemorated all the martyrs who defended the motherland by sacrificing their lives. .

The Mayor of Famagusta, Süleyman Uluçay, emphasized that history should not be forgotten, referring to the struggle fought by Mehmetçik and Mujahideen to liberate the people of Famagusta 50 years ago.

President Ersin Tataris, who attended the ceremony, said in his speech that Mehmetcik came to Famagusta 50 years ago and freed the people.

Stressing that the presence of Turkish soldiers on the island is essential, Tataris said, “We will continue to keep the TRNC alive with determination.” he said.

Tataris said, “Thanks to the struggle, Famagusta was liberated. The current borders of the TRNC were drawn with Operation Shona Síochána on 20 July 1974. We will continue to keep the TRNC alive with determination. The presence of Turkish soldiers on the island is absolutely essential.” he said.

Expressing his gratitude to the Republic of Turkey in his speech, the Tatar President commemorated all the martyrs and the Champion Angels, saying that Famagusta, the city of the Elders, is also the city of the Angels.

The ceremony ended with a parade followed by a performance by the Famagusta Municipality folk dance group and a mini concert.
