President Ersin Tatar received a delegation of British journalists visiting the country with the “Freedom and Justice for Northern Cyprus” campaign organization based in the UK.

According to the statement made by the Presidency, Telegraph journalist Madeline Grant, GB News producer Maria Murphy, The Critic assistant editor Graham Stewart and journalists Rebecca Banovic and Georgia Gilholy were present at the reception. Also at the reception were co-chairman of the campaign Çetin Ramadan, Member of Assembly İlkay Kay and Special Adviser to the President on Diplomacy and International Relations Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Işıksal and Presidential Foreign Affairs Press Officer Kerem Haser were also present.

In his speech at the reception, the Tatar President said that it is time for the international community to rethink the Cyprus problem and reaffirm the fundamental rights, sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Tatars: “The international community has not fulfilled its commitments

Explaining that a two-state solution in Cyprus will provide a realistic and sustainable solution basis for the Turkish Cypriot people and the Greek Cypriot people, Tataris continued his speech as follows:

“Negotiations carried out on a federal basis have been tried many times over half a century. The Turkish Cypriot side supported a solution in Cyprus in good faith, while the Greek Cypriot side rejected the plan by 76 percent in a separate simultaneous referendum in April 2004, which was accepted by Turkish Cypriots by 65 percent. Despite this result, the Greek Cypriot side was accepted as a member of the EU, while the Turkish Cypriots were excluded. Despite the promises of the international community to end isolation and introduce direct flights and direct trade, these have not been fulfilled.

Our young people cannot play with their own identity in many sports organizations. Our athletes have to participate in these competitions through the national teams of other countries. Inhumane isolation is a violation of our human rights, individual and social. “I hope that the new Labor Party Government, which was in power during the Annan Plan, can bring a new and fresh perspective to the Cyprus problem and the relationship with the Turkish Cypriot people.”

The Tatar President noted that the island of Cyprus is of geostrategic importance as it is located at the crossroads of three continents and is only 40 miles from Turkey.

Saying that the reason why there is no solution in Cyprus is the lack of incentive on the Greek Cypriot side to share management and resources on an equal basis with the Turkish Cypriot side, Tatars said that this was demonstrated for the last time by their failure . a summit was held in Crans-Montana in 2017.

The Tatar pointed out that former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who was in office during the period of the Annan Plan, insists that a two-state solution in Cyprus is a realistic and sustainable basis for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The Tatar President thanked the journalists and the “Campaign for Freedom and Justice for Northern Cyprus” for the visit.
