According to the program announcement, the “Tatort” from Münster was supposed to be shown on Sunday at 8:15 p.m. on Das Erste. But viewers were in for a surprise.

In the “Tatort” edition “A friend, a good friend”, the Münster duo Frank Thiel and Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl-Friedrich Boerne investigate the death of a lawyer. The episode of the crime series was broadcast for the first time in November 2022 – and should be shown again on Sunday, August 18, on Das Erste.

But ARD viewers who were looking forward to the crime thriller had to be patient. The film started 15 minutes later than usual. Comedian Carolin Kebekus was responsible for this.

As an ambassador for children’s rights, Carolin Kebekus used the primetime slot on Das Erste to make a statement. “Without strengthening children’s rights, our entire system is in danger,” warned the 44-year-old, who herself became a mother for the first time at the beginning of the year. “Children need our special care because they are our future. We must protect them and make sure that they feel seen, heard and loved. And damn it, they’re allowed to be a nuisance. Even at 8:15 p.m. on Das Erste,” was her message.

Therefore, the ARD audience heard the familiar sounds of the “Tatort” opening credits during prime time, but this time children’s eyes were superimposed during the melody. Carolin Kebekus then showed the viewers some social problems that particularly affect children – be it poverty, children’s rights or cyberbullying.

“Big topics require a lot of attention – and to do this we sometimes have to take unusual paths,” said ARD program director Christine Strobl in “Bild” explaining the short-term program change. “It is our job to inform people about relevant things. To this end, we have created an extensive offering in the ARD media library, which we now want to draw attention to with the #KINDERstören campaign in order to initiate public discourse on this important topic,” the 52-year-old explained the initiative.

The ARD’s decision was discussed on the short message service X: “Chapeau, ARD! Setting aside 15 minutes on the holy Sunday in prime time BEFORE ‘Tatort’ for an important topic is a fine move,” praised one viewer. “What a great idea,” “A damn good contribution to an important topic,” and “I’m delighted, the best 15 minutes in a long time,” were other positive comments. “ARD, we educate the ‘stupid’ people. Shameless, with money from our compulsory taxes,” “Why does something like this have to be at 8:15 p.m. now?” and “That’s it, I’m out, bye ARD,” were other criticisms.
