Taurus delivery: Debate under the sign of Taurus

by time news

The Bundestag wants to discuss the delivery of “additionally required long-range weapon systems and ammunition” this Thursday – a push by the coalition factions. Theoretically, they are bringing movement into the debate that has been going on for months about possible Taurus deliveries to Ukraine. But the controversial Taurus cruise missiles are not explicitly mentioned in the relevant motion for a resolution. That is why the CDU has submitted a second application highlighting these Taurus weapon systems. Ukraine had already officially requested this from Germany last May, but the federal government has so far hesitated. There is apparently a fear, especially in the Chancellor’s SPD party, that the delivery of these particularly long-range cruise missiles could provoke Russia. Jörg Lau is foreign policy coordinator in the politics department at ZEIT. In the podcast he analyzes why there is no mention of the Taurus cruise missiles in the traffic light factions’ proposal.

United as the Strike Germany initiative, artists worldwide are currently calling for a strike on German cultural institutions. The accusation: German cultural institutions, like the entire country, are too Israel-friendly and do not tolerate enough criticism of Israel. Well over 1,000 people from the worlds of art, culture, literature and science have now signed the strike call against Germany. In some institutions, the boycott has already led to several cancellations by artists and DJs. A new directive for cultural funding in Berlin that was adopted in January is seen as a trigger for international discontent: only artists who speak out against anti-Semitism in writing should receive state support in the future. Tobias Timm from the ZEIT features section researched who is behind Strike Germany and whether the movement also extends beyond Berlin’s borders.

And otherwise? The fossil that fooled even experts – until now
