Colombo,

Sri Lanka, India’s neighbor, is mired in a severe economic crisis. The country’s economy has suffered a major setback since the corona. Sri Lanka, which had borrowed from China to deal with the financial crisis, later became embroiled in a debt trap.

Due to this the value of the Sri Lankan rupee fell sharply in the international market. Thus, it is suffering from not being able to buy crude oil from abroad. Due to this, there is a shortage of fuel in Sri Lanka and power outages last for several hours daily.

In Sri Lanka, prices of gold, petrol, diesel and other essential commodities have also risen.

In this situation the tax on fruits imported to Sri Lanka has been increased. Taxes on goods including cheese and yoghurt have also been increased. The Finance Ministry has announced that the tax hike will be effective for six months.

The import duty on a kilo of apples has been raised to 200 rupees and the import duty on grapes to 100 rupees. Similarly, imports of oranges have been increased by Rs. 75 and pomegranates by Rs. 100.
