Haifa, Israel – A taxi driver and another individual were arrested on Friday evening following a high-speed chase, which culminated in the alleged running over of a police officer and multiple traffic violations in the city of Haifa. The injured officer, fortunately, sustained only minor injuries and has been rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
The series of events began when the police received a distress call reporting an erratic driver in Haifa’s Hadar neighborhood. Upon arriving at the scene, a police car signalled the driver, identified as a taxi driver, to pull over for inspection. However, instead of complying with the police’s instructions, the suspect continued to drive recklessly, brazenly crossing intersections against red lights and endangering other road users.
The pursuit finally came to a head at the Shaar Haemakim intersection, where the suspect momentarily halted before suddenly accelerating towards the police officer who had attempted to halt him. Shockingly, the driver struck the officer and promptly fled the scene, leaving the victim injured and requiring immediate medical assistance.
Following an intensive search, Haifa police officers successfully apprehended the suspect, a 36-year-old resident of Zarzir, within the village of Zarzir. Accompanying him was another individual, a 47-year-old resident of Netanya, who was arrested based on suspicions of his involvement in the incident. Both suspects have been taken into custody and will be interrogated by authorities.
Instances of road violence and attacks on law enforcement are deeply concerning, endangering the safety of both the public and those sworn to protect them.
