New York, September 3 (EFE).- American Taylor Fritz surprised German Alexander Zverev on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the US Open and will compete in his first Grand Slam semifinal.
Ranked 12th in the world, Fritz defeated Zverev, who is ranked 4th in the ATP, with scores of 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, and 7-6(3) in a match lasting three hours and 26 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows.
With Serbian Novak Djokovic (No. 2), Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3), and now Zverev (No. 4) out of the tournament, the men’s draw of this US Open, filled with surprises, has only two players from the ‘top 5’ remaining in the competition: Italian Jannik Sinner (No. 1) and Russian Daniil Medvedev (No. 5), who will face each other in the quarterfinals this Wednesday.
Fritz had already defeated Zverev in another Grand Slam this year: Wimbledon, where the German was eliminated in the round of 16 after winning the first two sets.
Zverev, who made one of the tournament’s highlights on Tuesday with a spectacular passing shot down the sideline that landed right on the line, finishes his Grand Slam season without having yet secured the first title of his career, after competing in the 2024 Roland Garros final (which he lost to Alcaraz) and the Australian Open semifinals (where he conceded to Medvedev).
The German was a finalist at the US Open in 2020, where he lost the title to Austrian Dominic Thiem.
Meanwhile, Fritz will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between fellow American Frances Tiafoe (No. 20) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (No. 9) in the semifinals of the New York Grand Slam.
