“She is someone who fights for the rights and ideals I believe in,” Swift wrote in a post directed at her 283 million Instagram followers, praising Harris as a “talented leader with the ability to unite.”
Swift also praised Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, saying she was “very encouraged and impressed” by Harris’s choice of him. She added that Walz has “been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and women’s reproductive rights.”
Furthermore, Swift mentioned that Trump’s posting of a fake image on his social media platform Truth Social, which made it appear as though she had endorsed him, led to her support for Harris.
“This post raised concerns about AI and the terrifying spread of misinformation,” Swift wrote, adding, “I felt the need to clarify my position as a voter in this election.”
Swift attached a photo of herself holding a cat to this post and signed it “Childless Cat Lady.” This was a sarcastic jab at Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance, who had referred to female Democratic lawmakers and supporters in such a manner.
Swift supported Biden in the 2020 election, and fans had been debating whether she would endorse Harris for weeks. Trump seemed aware of Swift’s influence, reportedly saying during a meeting with Republican House members in June, “Why would she support such an idiot?” referring to President Biden.
Trump also praised Swift as “exceptionally beautiful” and “very talented” in an interview with Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh, but remarked that she is “liberal” and “probably doesn’t like me.”
