American pop superstar Taylor Swift has set a new record for a solo artist at Wembley Stadium, the world’s largest stadium for pop music.

According to foreign news outlets such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on the 21st (local time), Swift performed eight times at Wembley Stadium the previous day, surpassing the record set by Michael Jackson, the king of American pop.

Swift is the first solo artist to play Wembley Stadium eight times on a single tour, eclipsing the previous record of seven played by Jackson during his 1988 Bad Tour.

“Thank you all for making me the first solo artist to play Wembley eight times on a single tour,” Swift said at her eighth Wembley show. “I can’t thank you enough.”

Including the group, it is the same record as Take That, the British pop group that Robbie Williams was a part of, which played the venue eight times during their 2011 single tour, Progress.

Wembley Stadium is also a familiar place to domestic music fans. It is where the 1985 charity concert ‘Live Aid’, a highlight of the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, took place, and global super K-pop group ‘BTS’ became a hot topic when they performed there twice as the first Korean singer in 2019.

Swift has performed to more than 1.2 million fans in the UK this summer, including at Wembley Stadium. It has been estimated that her tour generated around £1 billion (US$1.75 trillion) for the UK economy.

A geophysics team in Edinburgh also recorded seismic waves generated by dancing fans at Murrayfield Stadium and found that the ground moved up to 23.4 nanometres (nm) during the song ‘Ready For It?’

Swift, who is wrapping up her European tour with a stop in the UK, also shared her thoughts on the cancellation of her concert in Vienna, Austria, after a terrorist attack plot targeting the venue was discovered.

She said, “I was filled with a strange sense of fear and guilt toward those who wanted to come to the show,” but also “I was grateful to the Austrian government. Thanks to them, I was able to mourn the cancellation of the show, not the loss of life.” She explained that the reason she had refrained from commenting on the cancellation of the Vienna show so far was “because it could provoke those who were making threats. I wanted to show self-restraint.”

Swift was originally scheduled to perform three concerts in Vienna from the 8th to the 10th, but they were canceled after Austrian authorities confirmed a plan to attack the concert hall the day before. Authorities arrested three suspects on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack.
